We drive through ancient oak trees enjoying the scenery and soon we reach Stavros, a seaside village and port where we may have a quick stop for coffee or shopping. This is where our mountain pass begins as we follow the narrow scenic road enjoying spectacular views of both the sea and the mountain. Of course we may stop wherever you like to check out all sights especially the changing landscape. Our next stop is at Olympiada seaside village which named after the mother of Alexander the Great. It is a picturesque quiet village well known for the nearby ancient town of Stagira where Olympiada was exiled by King Cassander.
The ancient Stagira is the birth place of Aristotle, maybe the greatest philosopher ever and teacher of Alexander the Great. Here you may taste fresh mussels and clams (locally produced or fished) and tsipouro along with fresh Greek salads and fish. Or you may taste the traditional Greek fish soup (kakavia)
or one of the most amazing Greek starters the so called ntolmadakia which is basically rice rolled with vine leaves. Such an amazing fresh and tasty starter.
Our next destination is Ouranoupoli (Greek meaning the city of heaven) which is a frontier town to Mount Athos monasteries region. Visiting Mount Athos peninsula is strictly prohibited for women while men need to get a permit. It is a lively seaside town with plenty of seafront fish taverns and souvenir shops.
We continue our drive through trees and wild flowers and just in case you already missed the sea views we may climb down for a while to visit Stratoni, a seaside village with a great, long and sandy beach.
Once again we head to the mountain and our next stop is at Aristotle theme park at modern Stagira. It is located in a most beautiful area with a marvelous viewtowards the Gulf of Ierissos and the whole peninsula of Athos. It includes a series of interesting instruments which when used properly willshow the phenomena of natureasstudied by the great Greek philosopher.
Following the scenic road among high trees and colorful plants we reach the town of Arnea, a place of great history and tradition.
Its typical Macedonian architecture, rock build houses and narrow streets represent Greek tradition at its best. Surely worth to make a stop visiting the Historical and Folklore museum or simply taste local food.
On our way back we pass Agios Prodromos village which is widely known, especially to the locals, for its traditional Greek taverns. Indeed the world known Greek souvlaki is best grilled and served here.
Returning back to Thessaloniki we enjoy the scenic road and the great vistas of the mountain and also may have quick stops at other villages.
