Itinerary
Beach cleanup tour from Thessaloniki
Our tour starts at around 9 in the morning when picking you up from prearranged locations at Thessaloniki downtown. Quick stop for coffee or bougatsa (local traditional breakfast pie) and after a 45 minutes drive we reach Nea Mihaniona, a seaside town where the central fish market of Thessaloniki is located and the biggest, professional fishing fleet is gathered. We visit the harbor and the main Christian Orthodox church of the town and we proceed with visiting the local fish market where local fishermen sell their daily catches. We see marine species and discuss on regulations and suggestions by WWF on responsible seafood consumption. We discuss with local fishermen and get to know more about when and how is better to eat every single species that we look at.
We then shop fresh fish and seafood so to enjoy a great seafood menu by the sea, round noon. We choose the best fresh fish that we will cook according to traditional Greek recipes. At close proximity, a picturesque fishing village with around 1.200 inhabitants is located. Aggelohori (in Greek, the village of Angels) is built on a hill, just in front of the sea at the eastern tip of Thermaikos bay. The location is magnificent offering great views of Mount Olympus, Thessaloniki and Thermaikos bay (a great marine nursery area for many species).
We head to the beach and start to set up our gear and equipment for the cleanup and BBQ. For the next few hours we will restore and clean up the beach by picking up and removing all kinds of trash. As we pick up trash we use different bags so to separate dangerous from recyclable materials. It is really amazing difference we can make in just a few hours, leaving the beach clean and safe for everyone to enjoy it. We keep the cleanup activity safe for all participants by wearing fabric gloves, masks, sunglasses and closed-toe shoes.
It is about time to celebrate our hard work by the sea and start preparing our lunch. Local fresh ingredients for salads and starters give a great taste along with fresh fish and seafood combined with local Greek white wine and tsipouro, made of local grapes for the most adventurous. We discuss on a series of matters including how to promote clean and productive seas and oceans as well as how to raise public awareness on marine sustainable management.
As our event comes to its end, we pick up our gear and all trash including ours, so to leave the beach cleaner and safer. All collected marine litter and trash will be carried to a specific plant for sorting and recycling. Around afternoon we enjoy the amazing sunset of Thermaikos bay and head back to Thessaloniki. On our way back we may have a quick stop for coffee by the sea at a nearby seaside village.
