Alatza Imaret in Thessaloniki is one of the city’s monument of its Ottoman legacy. According to an inscription at the entrance of the building, Alatza Imaret was founded in February 1484 by Inogiolou Ishak Pasha who was the Grand Vizier during the reign of Mohammed II and later during the reign of Bayezid II of Thessaloniki. For smooth operation of the institution its founder, provided a significant amount of money and half of the income from the taxation of Galatista in Halkidiki region.

The name Alatza owes it to its colorful minaret (alatza = colored) which was destroyed after 1912, after Thessaloniki was liberated by the Greek Army and became part of the Modern Greek state. In fact, during the 17th century Alatza Imaret had emerged as one of the most important institutions of the city.

This Ottoman monument was renovated and fixed with the care of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Today Alatza Imaret is in very good condition and serves as an exhibition space where various events and periodical exhibitions take place. Surrounded by apartment buildings nowadays it used to be a great playground for the neighborhood’s children for several decades.
